What is a callable bond?

Modified on Thu, 12 Feb at 1:12 PM

A callable bond is a bond the issuer can repay early at a set call price on or after specific call dates, instead of waiting until maturity.

Issuers use this when interest rates fall or when they want to refinance on better terms. Because you might get paid back sooner than planned, callable bonds usually offer a higher coupon to compensate.
